Supporting early-stage and mid-career creative talent
Powerhouse's Artist Development programme provides dedicated space, resources and professional support for theatre-makers, writers, directors and performers looking to grow their practice.
Based at our newly redeveloped headquarters on Berrington Street in Hereford, the programme offers weekly sessions that combine professional networking, training, experimentation and creative development for a selected cohort of artists working in our region.
What we offer
Creative workspace — access to our Creative Development Studio for research, writing, experimentation and rehearsal
Play Library access — thousands of plays, scripts and theatre texts from classic drama to the most contemporary new work, including our unique collection donated by leading industry figures
Professional development — structured sessions covering craft skills, industry knowledge and career development
Networking — regular opportunities to connect with other artists and creative professionals in the region
Mentorship — guidance and support from experienced practitioners
Showcasing — platforms to share and test new work in development
Who is it for?
The programme serves creative professionals at two key stages:
Early-stage artists beginning to develop a professional practice in theatre, writing or performance
Mid-career artists looking to deepen their craft, explore new approaches or develop ambitious new work
This includes writers, actors, directors, and other theatre-makers based in or connected to Herefordshire and the wider West Midlands.
Our approach
Artist Development at Powerhouse follows our AAA model:
Access — opening the doors to our Play Library, studio space and professional resources
Activate — sparking creativity through structured workshops, development sessions and collaborative practice
Amplify — providing platforms and support to share new work with wider audiences
We believe that finding the space, resources and support to develop as an artist can be particularly challenging in rural areas. Powerhouse exists to change that — providing the ingredients creative professionals need to grow their talent and try bold new approaches, right here in Herefordshire.
We are currently working with a selected cohort of artists as part of our 2026 opening, following the completion of our major capital redevelopment.
